2009 Class of Mitchell Scholars Announced - Posted: 06.12.09
The Board of Directors of the Mitchell Institute is pleased to announce the new class of Mitchell Scholars. Each year, one graduating senior from every Maine public high school is chosen to receive a Mitchell Scholarship. The scholarships, which are typically $5,000 each, are awarded on the basis of academic potential, community service, and financial need. Recipients must be residents of Maine who will be entering their first year of a two- or four-year accredited college or university. As of this year, the Mitchell Institute has provided more than $7 million of financial assistance to 1,650 Maine students. A list of the Class of 2009 scholarship recipients is available HERE.
Dual Credit Early College in Maine - Posted: 06.12.09
Earlier this year the Mitchell Institute surveyed Maine high schools to learn about dual credit early college policies and participation, and we recently released a summary of the survey results. We found that 96% of Maine high schools allow students to take college courses for both high school and college credit ("dual credit"). This proportion has markedly increased from 73% (77 schools) in 2006. Respondents estimate that their students will take a total of 1,985 dual credit courses in 2008-2009. These figures indicate that dual credit participation has decreased only slightly, despite the fact that a major grant for early college from the National Governors Association ended over a year ago. Most importantly, we know from our research that high school students (particularly those who are underperforming) who take dual credit courses are significantly more likely than their peers to go on to college. The combined efforts of Maine high schools, colleges, the DOE, and the Legislature have succeeded in making early college opportunities available to a significant number of high school students across Maine. The survey results also suggest that the National Governors Association grant, which the Mitchell Institute administered, met its goal of establishing a number of self-sustaining early college partnerships.

Press Conference Set for Release of "Barriers II" Research Report - Posted: 07.13.07
The Mitchell Institute will hold a press conference on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bank of America Board Room, 100 Middle St, West Wing, 2nd Floor, in Portland to release the results of a year-long study, From High School to College: Removing Barriers for Maine Students. This report, funded by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation and Bank of America and known as Barriers II, explores the growing gap between college intentions and enrollment. In 2002, the Mitchell Institute's Barriers I report addressed the gap between Maine's strong high school completion rate and its below average college-going rate, but since then, while intent to enroll in college among Maine high school graduates has steadily increased, actual college enrollment has not.
