Mitchell Institute Starts Facebook Group - Posted: 09.25.08
Due to overwhelming requests from Mitchell Scholars and Alumni, we have created a Facebook group for the Mitchell Institute! You can find it by searching groups on Facebook (it's officially called "Mitchell Institute Scholars and Alumni"), or CLICK HERE. It is a private group, so you will need to request membership, then we will verify that you are actually a Mitchell Scholar or Alumni. We will be regularly posting information about upcoming events, opportunities, and other things that might be of interest to you. Additionally, we hope that Scholars and Alumni will use the group as a place to post questions that other Scholars or our staff might be able to assist you in answering. We want you to be able to network with each other this way! We're also betting that you'll discover that you know many of your fellow Scholars.

Mitchell Scholar Featured in Press Herald - Posted: 10.27.08
2008 Mitchell Scholar (and Steven B. Center Diversity Leadership Scholar) Bosco Oringa was featured on October 22, 2008 in a front-page article in the Portland Press Herald. Bosco is making quite a name for himself on the cross-country team at University of New England, where he is a pre-med student. His story, however, is far more than one of a great athlete. Bosco emigrated to the United States after fleeing his home country of Sudan and having lived for years in a refugee camp in Uganda. He came to the United States in 2005. Mitchell Institute Launches Career Coaching Network - Posted: 04.10.06
Mitchell Scholars have continually expressed a need for guidance as they explore career options. After a number of discussions with Mitchell Scholars and career professionals, we have developed a plan that we hope will help address this need: the Career Coaching Network (CCN).
CCN is a networking tool offered to Mitchell Scholars as a manageable way to make contacts with knowledgeable individuals to learn more about a potential career field or educational opportunities.
The Mitchell Institute regularly solicits new Career Coaches from the professional community. Coaches are asked to provide simple profiles of their education and career history, as well as contact information (preferably an e-mail address). That information will be made available to Mitchell Scholars who may wish to contact the Coaches for advice.
There is no expectation on the part of any Career Coach to find jobs for the students. The network is designed to provide support and information to Scholars as they try to make education and career choices. The profiles are hosted on a secure page on our web site that can only be viewed through a link.
Any Mitchell Scholars who wish to gain access to the Career Coaching Network — or any community members who wish to volunteer their services to the program — should contact Patty Higgins, at phiggins@mitchellinstitute.org.

After completing a 4-month study abroad with Student International Training in India from September-December of 2005, I'm going back for six weeks starting March 11 to complete a residency during which I’ll be writing vignettes about rural Indian life. In order to defray travel costs, I applied for and was awarded a Kathryn Davis Travel Fund Award in the amount of $1000.

This past year, I have been working towards my English and secondary education degree at Saint Joseph’s College. I have enjoyed being a resident advisor, writing tutor, and tour guide on campus. Also, I am participating in a Spring Break alternative program. My group will be at the Passamoquoddy Reservation in Pleasant Point, Maine, for a week. We will be working with the children and elderly for the most part. I look forward to learning about their rich history and bridging a cultural gap. I hope everyone has a wonderful spring semester. Best wishes to the senior Mitchell Scholars in pursuing their careers and/or educations!

I am currently student teaching at Messalonskee HS and MS, and will be graduating May 13th. I have completed two very successful seasons of UMF athletics: field hockey (conference runners-up this year) and basketball (conference champions and an appearance in the NCAA D-3 tournament). Softball season is underway. This summer I will be traveling to Australia to take part in the Stars softball tour... there I will be spending 14 days playing in a softball tournament against the Australian national team and others, as well as getting an opportunity to do some sight-seeing! I’m really excited about such a great opportunity for some once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

I am graduating this May from the University of Connecticut with a major in Marketing from the School of Business and a minor in Political Science. I have recently been accepted to Teach For America. Teach For America is a national, privately–funded project which sends college graduates of all majors, as corps members, to inner–city and rural schools to help close the achievement gap which exists in our country between these areas and those which are wealthier. As part of the program, I will be a full-time teacher for two years in New York City and will receive full teacher salary, an AmeriCorp educational award (approximately $9,000 to use towards graduate school) and other benefits. Although the application deadline has passed for this next academic year, I encourage fellow Mitchell Scholars and other determined college students to read more online at www.teachforamerica.org and to apply next year.

I have been working with Bates EMS since the beginning of my freshman year and I recently became the Chief of Service as a sophomore. Bates EMS is licensed by the state as a non-transporting service that provides emergency medical care to the Bates community. It is also an all-volunteer service. We have rotating duty crews of three people that are on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am looking forward to the challenges that the next two years will bring as the new Chief of Bates EMS.

I have been very busy this year. I have joined our Habitat for Humanity group at our campus, and we are giving up our spring break to go and build a house. I am a member of the A.P.E.T. which stands for AIDS Prevention Educational Teachers. I am also a member on the community service counsel. We try to raise money for numerous organizations like Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Relay for Life, to name a few. I started a volunteer tutoring service at the local high school here. We have college students serving as mentors/tutors to high school kids — FREE! This is a lot of work but very rewarding. I am also involved with one of my professors with angiogenesis research — very interesting. We meet numerous times a week to do experiments and research. During my break in January, I shadowed a surgeon in Portland. It was a great opportunity to see things first hand. I am also preparing to study abroad in the first semester of my junior year. I am very excited about this adventure.

I have had some very exciting things happen since I last wrote you. I have been working in Vincent Markowski’s lab at the Maine Center for Environmental Toxicology and Health at the University of Southern Maine. We are doing some cutting–edge research. We are almost a year into our current project, and I will be presenting on the topic Behavioral Impairments Produced by Developmental Exposure to the Flame Retardant decaBDE at this year’s Thinking Matters conference at USM. I also just built a house in Naples, Maine and moved into it in November. My best friend, Kate Durost, (George Stevens Academy ’03, University of Maine ’07) who is also a Mitchell Scholar, is currently in Honduras on a two–week mission trip. She is doing some really great service work there, and I thought I would let you know about that as well.

Things have been going pretty well here at Bates. This semester has been really difficult, but I’m managing just fine. I recently got accepted to a Bates-sponsored Fall Semester in Nanjing, China. I’m really looking forward to that one. I also just found out that I was accepted to the Mount Desert Island Marine Biological Lab for a summer intern position. I’ll be graduating in May from SMCC with my second associate's degree (this one in business). Also, I just got back from Washington, DC, where I participated in an "alternative spring break". We worked with underprivileged children at an after–school program, we did yard work for a non-profit, and we cooked meals for the hungry. It was a wonderful way to spend a week.

I designed a poster for a statewide competition held by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) for their upcoming NextGen College Investment program campaign. This competition is an annual event to give Maine students the opportunity to submit their proposed design for consideration in the marketing campaign that NextGen uses to promote their College Investing Plan, with the theme, "When I grow up, I want to be..." I am very proud to say that I was awarded a $3,000.00 scholarship for winning first prize in this competition, and my winning entry will be used in NextGen’s upcoming campaign.

I taught Special Education for a year and a half after graduating from Colby. Recently, I accepted the new Executive Director position for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine. Also, I’m still coaching high school basketball. After completing 2 years working at the Depression Clinical and Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as a research coordinator, I am in my first year of the developmental–clinical psychology PhD program at the University of Maine–Orono. My lab is currently researching children’s quality and quantity of friendships and how those factors relate to later psychological adjustment. The program is 5 years long, since I am essentially completing work for both a clinical and developmental Ph.D.

I’m now teaching Spanish in the New York City public school system. It’s a middle school in Brooklyn — only 4 blocks from where I now live! I moved this summer from Maine to the city. I love the excitement here, but I miss the tranquility of Maine. I still do 70 hours of volunteer work each month, so it keeps me busy. This April, I am planning a trip back to see friends in Barcelona, and I’m off to Finland and Poland for a month this summer!! I can’t complain about the teaching schedule. Thanks for keeping track of us!! It’s nice to see updates!!

Mitchell Scholars Serving in Iraq - Posted: 04.10.06
Three Mitchell Scholars who are military reservists have notified us that they have been called up to active duty to serve in Iraq. Alex Cornell du Houx, a Mitchell Scholar at Bowdoin from Solon, was deployed in December 2005. Jacob Pelletier, a Mitchell Scholar at University of Maine at Fort Kent from Frenchville; and Timothy Irish, a Mitchell Scholar at the University of Maine from Wytopitlock, were deployed in January 2006. We are very proud of these young men for their service to our country. If you know of other Mitchell Scholars who are in the armed forces, please let us know so that we can keep them and their families in our thoughts. -
Mitchell Scholars Commit Time to Group Community Service Projects - Posted: 04.10.06
In addition to supporting the educational aspirations of Maine's young people, the Mitchell Institute assists Scholars by providing regular communication and exchange of ideas, leadership development, summer fellowships, interaction with career professionals — and involvement in community service activities. A history of community service is among the criteria used for Mitchell Scholar selection.
On March 25th, Mitchell Scholars Katherine Porter, April Stansfield, David LaPoint and Chelsea Neath (all students at the University of Maine); Mitchell Institute Alumni Council members Jesse McIntire (Maine Maritime Academy) and Dara Kidder McIntire (Bates); and Mitchell Institute staff member Patty Higgins participated in a group community service project in Old Town. They restocked and organized the Old Town Food Pantry.
On March 30th, Mitchell Scholars Sara Bradstreet and Brad Campbell (both students at St. Joseph’s College), Jamie Burwood (Bowdoin), Kevin Bui (USM) and Mitchell Institute Alumni Council member Kate Leach (Bowdoin) joined Patty Higgins to cook dinner for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Portland. The Ronald McDonald House provides affordable, safe and supportive temporary home–like housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals and medical facilities.
Last year, Mitchell Scholars reported devoting a total of nearly 17,000 hours to community service during the academic year. -

After many months in development, the Mitchell Institute launched its newly redesigned and expanded Web site on Friday, January 20, 2006. Although some sections are still under construction, we plan to have the site finished and fully operational by mid-February, when an official announcement will be sent to all Mitchell Scholars, alumni, and supporters. We are grateful to SlickFish Studios for their design assistance.- Mitchell Scholarships Increase to $5,000 for Class of 2006 - Posted: 01.20.06
Beginning with the class of 2006, the Mitchell Institute will increase its awards from $4,000 to $5,000 for students who are pursuing four-year degrees and from $2,000 to $2,500 for students pursuing two-year degrees. Students already receiving scholarships will continue to receive the amount originally awarded to them. Criteria for the scholarship are: academic performance/potential, a record of community service, and financial need. Each applicant must be a legal resident of Maine and must plan to attend a four-year or two-year degree program at an accredited college or university. He or she must also be a graduating senior from a public high school in Maine. Applicants must be planning to enter their first year of college in September of the year of their application for the scholarship. The deadline for the 2006 scholarship application, which can be obtained by clicking HERE, is April 1, 2006.- Sen. George Mitchell Welcomes 2005 Mitchell Scholars at Brunch - Posted: 08.23.05
August 16, 2005, Portland, ME: On Sunday, August 21, 2005, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Wells Catering and Conference Center at the University of Maine in Orono, Senator George Mitchell will welcome the recently selected 2005 class of Mitchell Scholars and their families. The Senator will be the keynote speaker. More than 250 guests, including members of the Mitchell Institute Board of Directors, university and college leaders, and other supporters from across the state, are expected to attend.
Since 1995, the Mitchell Scholarship Program has awarded more than $4.3 million in scholarships to 1,130 Maine high school graduates. Each year, one hundred thirty (130) graduating seniors -- one from every Maine public high school -- are chosen to receive Mitchell Scholarships. Annual scholarships averaging $4,000 each are awarded on the basis of academic potential, community service, and financial need. Recipients must be residents of Maine who will be entering their first year of a two- or four-year accredited college or university. A list of the Class of 2005 scholarship recipients is available by clicking HERE.
Lauren McNally, a 1999 Mitchell Scholar, said, "Receiving the Mitchell Scholarship meant so much more than just help with money. The Mitchell Institute programs creates a wonderful sense of community, keeps us active in service projects in Maine, and helps us develop our leadership skills. I feel really lucky to have had this opportunity."
Nearly 30% of Mitchell Scholars selected in 2005 are first generation college students, and almost two thirds are from non-college tradition families. Nearly 60% come from families with less than $5,000 available from their own resources to contribute to the student's college education.
In addition to scholarships, the Mitchell Institute offers a variety of support programs that encourage community service and that provide career based opportunities for summer employment and leadership/professional development. The Mitchell Institute believes that the exceptional 94% college retention rate among Mitchell Scholars is due in part to these and other meaningful support programs. While Maine ranks very high nationally in high school graduation rates, it does not fare as well as most of the nation in college enrollment and completion rates.
The work of the Mitchell Institute also includes an ongoing research component. A long-term study of the Mitchell Scholars began in 2000 to gauge the effectiveness of the scholarship and support programs, and to learn more about the Scholars' college and career experiences. Other efforts undertaken at the Mitchell Institute focus on high school reform and early college.
Additional information about the Mitchell Institute is available at www.mitchellinstitute.org or by contacting Lisa Veleff at (207) 773-7700.
