In order to learn more about access to education in Maine, the
Mitchell Institute launched its research program in 2000 with a study
of its scholarship recipients, the Mitchell Scholars. Our longitudinal
study follows the Scholars throughout college and for ten or twenty
years beyond. We investigate the impacts of our scholarship and support
programs on the Mitchell Scholars, the ways the Scholars overcome
educational hurdles, the educational and professional choices they
make after college, and their levels of community involvement.
We hope to continue learning from the Mitchell Scholars, and that
the products of our research will allow us to improve
our scholarship and support programs as well as to learn about how
to make higher education more accessible to all Maine students.
