Mitchell Institute MILE II career development event

There is a particular kind of confidence that comes not from being told you are capable, but from sitting across from someone who has walked your path and hearing them say: you are going to be fine.

That is what MILE II is designed to create. This spring, 63 Mitchell Scholars gathered for the Mitchell Institute’s annual career development event, a full day of personalized support, professional connection, and the kind of candid conversation that does not happen in a classroom.

Scholars had access to one-on-one career strategy sessions with community professionals, small group workshops covering LinkedIn, resume writing, cover letters, and interview skills, a structured networking hour with industry partners, and the opportunity to get a professional headshot. Thirty-five community partners participated, including 15 Mitchell Alumni who returned not because they had to, but because they remembered what it felt like to need that support and wanted to give it back.

The Scholars felt it.

“It was very valuable to see my fellow Scholars and be reminded that I am in a supportive community full of excellent people,” one Scholar wrote in their feedback.

For many, the one-on-one sessions stood out as the most meaningful part of the day. Scholars described leaving with concrete next steps, renewed direction, and in some cases, a completely new perspective on their own potential.

“The most valuable thing I learned was that my unique interests are what will make me stand out during job interviews,” one Scholar shared. Another wrote simply: “I learned that connection opens up doors.”

Others described leaving with something harder to quantify but no less real.

“The most valuable thing I have learned is that I am much more adequately equipped and sufficiently skillful than I had previously believed,” one Scholar wrote. “I think I am ready to really launch my career.”

That is the quiet work of MILE II. Not just career preparation, but the kind of reassurance that a Scholar from rural Maine, navigating a professional world that can feel far away, sometimes needs most.

“No matter what after graduation, we will find something that we enjoy, even if it is not what we had originally planned,” one Scholar reflected. “It will all work out in the end, and we have many resources to help us during hard times.”

MILE II is one of several signature programs the Mitchell Institute offers to support Scholars not just through college, but through the transition into careers and lives that reflect their full potential. It is made possible by the generosity of donors and the dedication of alumni who understand that the Mitchell community does not end at graduation.

It is only getting started.
